There was drama at Jet’s store situated at Levy Junction shopping Mall in Lusaka when two ladies were sprayed yellow paint after they were alleged caught attempting to steal.
A lady identified as Amanda who is a presenter at Zambia National Broadcasting Coorporation (ZNBC) was caught attempting to steal two pairs of shoes, a bra, and some artificial facial makeup.
The government employee who works for TV2 is believed to have been tempted to shoplift after she went window shopping with only 15 Kwacha stashed in her big black handbag but she was monitored by the store’s webcam before getting away with the commodity.
The two ladies were quickly manhandled and sprayed with yellow paint while being held in detention by the store security personnel.
The incidence has however not been well received with members of the public who have demanded Jet store owners to be shut down for violating the rights of the ladies who deemed innocent until proven guilty by the courts of law.
Isaac Mwanza, a governance expert says:
Prosecute Jet and shut it down
The officials who painted these ladies must be prosecuted and Jet must be shut down from Zambia for abusing the fundamental human rights protected by the Zambian Constitution. If these ladies were suspected to have taken something from the shop, they should have been reported to Police rather than a foriegn or local shop allowing it’s workers to take the law in their own hands.
Article 15 of the Constitution of Zambia says
15. [Protection from inhuman treatment]
No person shall be subjected to torture, or to inhuman or degrading punishment or other like treatment.
We demand the Ministry of Home Affairs and Commerce address this matter URGENTLY!
I would like to see women activist do a Sit-In Protest at JET shop so they are forced not to operate until they tender the apology and do such actions as deemed fit to try and restore the dignity of women. Come on NGOCC and all those women. Don’t just drink tea and hold meetings in your boardrooms while you issue statements that mean nothing. Get out there and defend these women and their rights. I would like to see women from the media take up this challenge and add their voice!
