Clerk of the National Assembly Doris Mwiinga presents the documents to President Lungu

The Constitution of Zambia Bill and the Constitution Amendment Bill have been presented to President Edgar Chagwa Lungu for assent.

Clerk of the National Assembly Doris Mwiinga presented the documents to President Lungu at State House today.

Ms. Mwiinga said the copies of the documents had been certified by Speaker of the National Assembly Patrick Matibini.

President Lungu said he could not sign the Bill immediately because he has received a petition which he has to consider before assenting to the Bill.

The Head of State said he will assent to the Constitution Bill at a special ceremony to be held by the first week of January in 2016.

President Lungu said assenting to the Bill will be done at a ceremony to celebrate and give the Constitution the honour it deserves.

The President disclosed that Heritage Party President Brigadier General Godfrey Miyanda who is also former Republican Vice-President has petitioned him over the Constitution.

The President said he wants to reflect on the petition from General Miyanda before assenting to the Bill.

He noted that it was important to give the minority an opportunity to be heard hence the need to look at the petition before acting on the Bill.

The President said he respects the will of Zambians and that he will give them the Constitution they want.

The presentation of the Bills to President Lungu was witnessed by Minister of Justice Ngosa Simbyakula, Minister of Higher Education Michael Kaingu, Finance Deputy Minister Christopher Mvunga and Gender and Child Development Deputy Minister Obvious Chisala.
