Two people have died after suffocating in a well in Nakonde District of Muchinga Province.
The incident has been confirmed to ZANIS by both Nakonde District Commissioner Field Simwiinga and Muchinga Province Police commissioner Auxensio Daka.
Daka said the unfortunate incident occurred on Friday around 09:00 hours when Clifford Simwanza of Katozi village aged 35 was cleaning a 22- metre -deep well at his house and later got stuck.
Daka said it was after Simwanza got stuck that he called for help from his neighbour Lyborn Simuyota aged 30 who also got stuck in the well and both men suffocated and died instantly.
A combined team of Zambia police and fire brigade managed to retrieve both bodies and deposited them at Nakonde District Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem and burial.
In a separate incident, a 65 –year- old village headman of Chiwale village in Nakonde district of Muchinga province has been shot dead by unknown people.
The incident has been confirmed to the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Nakonde today by Muchinga Province Police commissioner Auxensio Daka.
Daka said Siyingwa Kachinga, a village headman of Chiwale village was shot and killed on Friday by unknown people on allegation of practicing witchcraft.
Daka said Siyingwa was found dead with multiple pellets on the left arm and back of the abdomen.
The police commissioner said a short gun is suspected to have been used to commit the crime and no arrests have been made.
