Armed Police Wednesday afternoon fought running battles with Monze residents after residents attempted to greet and console Hakainde Hichilema and his Deputy following their release from the cells.
Hichilema who was accompanied by his wife Mutinta, Mwamba, Party National Chairperson Mutale Nalumango traveled to Monze in the morning for the funeral of prominent farmer Jeremiah Munang’andu who was buried today.
The UPND leaders were greeted with teargas canisters from the police who were fighting with residents who had gathered to have a glance of their leaders by the roadside.
The residents who vowed to put an end to what they called foolish oppressive schemes by Edgar LUNGU took to the streets in support of opposition leaders.
When police saw that the residents were becoming more hostile, they ran for their lives into near-by houses for refuge while others cried for help.
“We were teargassed on arrival in Monze town on our way to the funeral home. It has now come to such levels where we cannot even attend funerals for our relatives as Police keep blocking and denying us our rights to many freedoms. Thank God the resilience of our people we managed to proceed to the funeral house,” stated HH on his Facebook page.
