UPND Lawyer Martha Mushipe has been arrested and charged for seditious practices relating to a document “strategies by PF against UPND” allegedly generated by the ruling party.
The document was circulated to the media in the run upto the August 11 elections.
Former UPND Youth Ephraim Shakafuswa even reported to the Police that he and other Youths were allegedly being drilled to cause confusion in the country.
Martha a vocal lawyer for the opposition UPND was arrested from Woodlands Police after being summoned for questioning at 10:30 hours.
She was briefly detained but was later taken to Court where she was granted a K25,000 bail in her own cognisance with two working surities after appearing before Magistrate Karma.
Ms Mushipe was represented by Counsel Mulembe and Counsel Belly Muti.
The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) was represented by Counsel Nsama Nsama.The matter has since been adjourned to October 4, 2016 for mention.
Speaking after her release, Ms Martha said she is constrained from commenting much on the matter as it amounts to subprejudice. She however says the matter referred to as seditious is a PF-generated document and is meant to stifle the democratic tenets of the citizens and to a large extent intimidate citizens.
She says the act to arrest her is an assault on fundamental rights of citizens.
