Lungu must now handover power to the Speaker – HH

UPND president Hakainde Hichilema has asked disputed President-elect Edgar Lungu to respect the constitution and handover power to Speaker of the National Assembly Patrick Matibini.

 

Briefing the press this evening, Hichilema said he and his running mate Geophrey Bwalya Mwamba this afternoon successfully launched their petition in the Constitution Court challenging the election of Lungu.

 

Hichilema said Lungu must respect the new constitution he signed which was meant to fix him (HH ) which provides that a president must handover power in an event of a petition. He informed the prese that State House, Cabinet Office, Attorney General and the Speaker have been served with the petition.

 

He has urged Lungu to stop making presidential direction as the petition stops him from exercising executive powers.

 

The UPND leader says all preparations for Lungu’s inuguaration must be halted until the petition is concluded. He thanked the legal team comprising of seven law firms whom he says have put up a good case.

 

Hichilema says he was certain of victory and asked his supporters to wait for the court. He thanked the Zambian people for having voted for him saying what is happening is a temperal setback.
