Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja has explained the happenings surrounding the crime Former Lusaka Province Minister Obvious Mwaliteta and his subsequent arrest. Kakoma also gave a comprehensive post-election report.
In a report made available to Zambian Eye, Kakoma also disclosed the criminal activities in previous week.
“We have arrested five people in connection with a case of Aggravated Robbery that occurred on Sunday 14th August, 2016 between 10:00 hours and 13:00 hours along Haille Selaise road near City Airport in Lusaka,” Kanganja said.
“Facts of the matter are that on the material day, three returning officers who were coming from the Copperbelt aboard a Zambia Air Force plane, after arriving at Lusaka City Airport, were intercepted as they were proceeding to the Electoral Commission of Zambia Headquarters to deliver materials that included records of proceedings (Form 18) and announcement of poll results (Gen 12).
“Upon arrival at City Airport, they were picked up by a Toyota Land cruiser vehicle belonging to the Electoral Commission of Zambia. After driving for about fifty meters from City Airport gate, a Toyota Hiace mini bus blocked them from the front whilst another vehicle, a Toyota Mark II blocked them from behind.
“About fifteen men came out from the mini bus and pepper sprayed the ECZ officials in their faces and later assaulted them. The assailants got away with the Electoral Commission of Zambia materials including the
victims’ personal belongings, that is, a hand bag containing various documents and K 350 cash and a Blackberry phone valued at K4,000 and sped off, abandoning the Toyota Mark II at the scene. In the process, they dropped an Alcatel phone and a number plate ABZ 1919.
“Both the abandoned motor vehicle and a phone have been identified to be for a named UPND official who is on the run. Five people have since been arrested in connection with two counts of Aggravated Robbery Contrary to section 294 and 22 of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia have appeared in Court today, Friday 19th August, 2016.”
He identified those arrested as Obvious Summerton Mwaliteta aged 46, Evans Mukobela aged 44, Macmillan Shimukonka aged 33, Laswell Phiri aged 42 and Emmanuel Mumbi aged 46 and said a manhunt for the others who are on the run has continued.
He further said the motor vehicle which was used to drop the three Electoral Commission officials at Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe Airport in Ndola was also attacked by some UPND cadres on the Copperbelt, who went away with photocopies of records of proceedings (Form 18) and announcement of poll results (Gen 12). The alleged assailants were arrested and charged with Aggravated Robbery and they have since appeared in Court.
