ecz-logoThe Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has refuted rumors that it plans to postpone the August 11th General Elections. ECZ, through its spokesperson Chris Akufuna who explained the legislation that guides  general elections.

Akufuna says there is no law that gives it power to postpone a general election, adding that the Commission can only postpone a by-election if the environment is not conducive to hold a peaceful, credible and fair election.

Akufuna says stakeholders should desist from making statements that may cause confusion before, during and after the elections.

He states that the credibility of the Commission in holding credible elections cannot be questioned.

Akufuna adds that even claims of rigging the August elections are neither here nor there, stating that the commission is ready to conduct credible elections.

ECZ on Saturday July 9, 2016 suspended campaigns for ten days in Lusaka and Namwala districts after a series of political violence.

And when lifting the suspension, Akufuna  warned that the commission will now be forced to disqualify individual candidates and the political party sponsoring them.

There has been political intolerance and violent acts between cadres with the pulling down of posters and bill boards on the rise.
