Opposition UPND president Hakainde Hichilema has arrived in Mongu for a series of campaign meetings in Western province.
Hichilema whose campaign programme on the Copperbelt province was stopped by the Patriotic Front government this week arrived in Mongu on Thursday.
He is accompanied by former First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa and senior party leaders from the province.
Hichilema arrived to the thunderous welcome as dozens of Mongu residents received him at Mongu Airport.
The UPND leader is in the province for campaigns ahead of 2016 polls. He said he was happy with the ‘great reception’ given to him.
“We thank the Almighty God for the safe trip. Just arrived at Mongu airport for party mobilisation meetings in Western Province. Pray for us and the country. We remain one people. Looking forward to a wonderful but busy weekend here. Have a productive day and God bless you all,” Hichilema posted on his facebook page.
Zambia goes to the polls next year which is expected to be closely contested between President Edgar Lungu and Hichilema who lost by less than two percent in the January 2015 Special Presidential election.
